This course enabled me to improve my teaching by introducing co-operative learning among students. I have participated in the IUCEE-2009 for the course onMicroprocessors. Inspite of having teaching experience of 6 years, I could learn a couple of teaching techniques to make the classes more effective. Prof. Rafiquzzaman’s simplistic approach helped me understand the Pentium processor well. The course also demonstrated how a curriculum on Pentium processors can be framed. I have already shared these simple techniques of teaching with my colleages in the college. Thank you IUCEE for giving me an opportunity to be a part of a new revolution in technical teaching.

This is my first year in the feild of teaching after working or several years in industry. It was wonderful experience to be part of IUCEE in the initial phase of my teaching carrier. I attended the course C8 on Effective teaching. Currently I am using few of the techniques learned during the workshop. Once I get experience of using these techniques atleast for 6 months then I will start sharing them with my collegues.

Iam Ms. Gayatri working as Assistant prof at vasavi college of Engg. I have attended course on Analysis of Algorithms. The entire sessions were quite interesting . With support of IUCEE , I was exposed to new approaches , & techniques followed in understanding and solving tougher concepts., Once again i thank Rajashekaran sir, for being a constant source of inspiration. Here’s the new change which i found in students after me attending workshop. Students are coming forward in referring concepts from different books, they have developed the enthusiasm to learn concepts deeply beyond the prescribed syllabus.

IUCEE has great potential in revolutonising engineering education in India .
However I have some suggestions
1) Set up regional centres in every state of India and set up chapters across varoious engineering colleges.
2) Develop a IUCEE certified core team of trainers and facilitators for each region who can assist in taking latest state of the art technologies to every nook and corner of the country
2) Also involve corporates like Tata who have been doing excellent work in the field of education.
3) Create a mechanism for collaborative research for faculty who are pursuing their Phd with industries wherein both can benefit mutually

If one wants to settle in teaching profession, one has to learn ” how to make others learn”. IUCEE is the simplest and effective medium for the purpose. If one has been already in the profession, IUCEE will make a better teacher. The case is same for educational leadership too. I am impressed this way through my participation in FLI-2008 leadership work-shop. As Principal of an engineering college of repute, I am advising my faculty to take part in the activity both in FLIs and at our college. I wish all success to Prof. Krishna Vedula in this endeavour.

Engagement of faculty and participants in the workshop was tremendous during the FLI- 2008 and FLI-2009, not only between faculty and participants but among participants also. This improved the learning experience greatly. The interaction among the participants has helped in building a community of faculty who is taking this initiative of IUCEE further to other institutions in India.
IUCEE initiatives have exposed the Indian faculty to active learning techniques used in US and also about how to sensitize the students about the issues of local and global concerns like, environment, ethics, social, business etc. while teaching a highly technical engineering subject. Wherever these techniques are implemented in the class room teaching, these are transforming the engineering education. This is making the students understand the relevance of the subject/topic being taught to him, leading to his interest and improved learning experience. The impact of this will be to make students’ aware and concerned about societal issues/problems and ready to provide engineering solutions to such problems. This will improve their employment readiness, earning capacity and service to society.
Challenge is to reach all the faculty in India. This can only be achieved by active leadership of IUCEE trained Indian faculty.

I have been teaching for nearly 50 years and I know the intricacies of teaching-learning process.
However, I did not imagine what was in store for me when I applied for the course on ‘Effective Teaching’, conducted by Rich Felder and Rebecca Brent. The very first thought I had, after the workshop, was about what I missed all along.

Success Story of IUCEE’s initiatives in providing quality engineering education by Prof. S.R. Doradla, HOD-EEE, Vasavi College of Engineering
The teachers are highly benefited by various courses offered by IUCEE. The faculties trained by IUCEE are taking up leadership roles in the Regional Centers of IUCEE to share the Knowledge with other teachers who could not attend the IUCEE course modules. Three Heads of Departments from Vasavi College of Engineering, which is a Premier Engineering Institution among the Privately-Aided Engineering Institutions, attended three course modules offered by IUCEE in the summer of 2008. Three more faculty members attended another set of three course modules offered by IUCEEE in the summer of 2009. One Head of the Department is included among these three faculty members. The faculty members who attended various course modules offered by IUCEE are keen to conduct these sessions with other key resource persons to disseminate their knowledge to other faculty for strengthening the teaching-learning process. I was a participant of C-12(Introduction to Computer Engineering) Course at FLI-2009. IUCEE is contributing a lot to engineering education, which is beyond imagination. Indian engineering faculty is getting so much from subject experts with the efforts of IUCEE. I am applying new skills learned by attending FLI 2009 to my class daily. The knowledge I acquired at FLI 2009 is not only helping me in my teaching but it is very useful in carrying research also. I attended Prof Anderson’s course on ‘Algorithms’ in June 2008. Though I have been teaching ‘Design of Algorithms’ for over 6 years, the course helped me understand the manner in which this course is taught in US universities. This has helped me in improving the content and delivery of my course here in Pune, India. I strongly urge the industry to support IUCEE Courses and I recommend each and every teacher in India to undergo the courses of their interest in IUCEE. This will go a long way in ensuring high quality enginnering education in India.

IUCEE workshop on ‘effective teaching’ is the one to be made mandatory for all (especially engineering) faculty. The teaching tips given helps faculty to understand how to make students understand a complex topic easily by means inductive teaching. This in turn helps the students to think innovatively.

Sir,
I am a lady engineering graduate of 1967 and suffered a lot after completion of my BE from the feeling of not being able to apply my knowledge as a doctor would be able to do soon after completion of MBBS degree. I attended a two-day National Seminar on Quality Engineering Education in Indian Perspective in Engineering Staff College of India at Hyderabad in July 2007 and was surprised to find that similar discussions are still going on.
However, when I attended IUCEE workshop in July’08 & June’09, I started realizing that the purpose of solving the above problem is being attacked by he IUCEE efforts more systematically. The relevance is being ensured globally, which is an additional factor.
The industry interaction point is not very clear to me but I am confident that even that will be sorted out soon. The fact that they are taking efforts to collaborate with all such organizations having similar intentions of making the engineering education experiential is very encouraging.
Hence, I feel that the IUCEE committee fundamentally made of experienced Indian authorities only will surely lead to a paradigm change in engineering education in India.

As a participant in both 2008 and 2009 LABview sessions, I say without reservation, that IUCEE has done a tremendous job in spreading knowledge among engineering faculty. I attended the IUCEE 2008 and 2009 FLI. It has been a wonderful experience for me. The way I plan and execute my everyday chores at work and life had changed since July 2008, thanks to the technical and managerial input given at these workshops.
The courses C6-Computer Networks and C22-Developing Leadership Skills (2008) and C*-Effective Teaching had specifically helped me in the longterm planning for my courses and projects.

I have attended the course on Statics during 2009, where we were introduced to methodologies for effective teaching and classroom assessment. I have implemented some of these methodologies in my UG and PG classes and found it to be very effective in assessing thestudent’s understanding of the subject. A very different, novell and effective approach to familiarize Indian Engineering Teachers have a global perspective on engineering education. Interacting with Prof. Hopcroft for the C17 course on Theory of Computing was a wonderful learning experience and I am glad to have had the opportunity to extend my learning to my students, my colleagues and to my colleagues of the sister institutions.

I have attended the C21 course in IUCEE. It was a different experience being there at the FLI. I am now feeling improvement in the various aspects of teaching. I am able to practice the experience I gained at FLI in my classes. There are good positive changes. I am sure that ultimately the students are learning and gaining. This is the result of the thought process initiated by the visionaries behind IUCEE. I hope it will succeed in materializing its vision.

I attended C-17-Theory of Computation offered by Prof.Jhon Hopcroft in July’09 at Infosys,Mysore.I’ve been using his book to teach theory of computation for sevearl years.It’s a dream come true for me to attend Jhon’s lectures on Theory of Computation!! I was fortunate enough to be one of the participants in C21 course of “Strength Of Materials” at 2009 FLI conducted at Mysore. It has given a new dimension in teaching the subject in addition to the traditional method of teaching and learning process. The demonstration of different phenomenon in the form of activities, mini projects is helping the academically challenged students to a very great extent by inculcating interest among them towards learning the subject.The use of open ended problems is helping the students a lot in understanding the concepts clearly. The use of excel for drawing SF and BM diagrams was received by our students overvehmently. In short the IUCEE has helped us in shifting from teaching Paradigm to learning Paradigm.

Happy Teachers Day !!!
I attended the Course 23 (Innovate, Create, Manufacture and Manage Digitally) of the FLI-2009 programme at Mysore. The course was very informative, and I thank earnestly the organizers and the four speakers who are all brilliant in their field, but I am a bit sorry to say that the subject was somewhat software-specific, and those who already have different CAD/CAM/CAE (or PLM) softwares in their respective campuses might find it very difficult to revise the concepts taught since there’s no practice !!! Anyway, many topics were explored in depth and we had enough hands-on-experience, and I understand that more or less, we can use the same procedure of tackling problems using other softwares, just a different syntax and interface is to be followed. I was very much impressed with the discussion on PLM on the final day, and I have gathered enough additional contents viz., videos etc. from internet, and will be shortly readying up for delivering a seminar at our campus for our faculty and students. If that’s a success, I will arrange for an inter-collegiate seminar on the same.

As a Participant of IUCEE FLI 2008 and 2009 i could comment on IUCEE as a new horizon in the arena of engineering education of India. In a country like where the fruits of globalisation are just budding and a country with a huge potential of human resources there is a huge necessity of trainers for the human resources. this task of training the trainer is very judiciously taken up IUCEE. I was lucky enough to participate in “Strength of Material” C21 course at Infosys Campus-Mysore. I had been waiting for the right time to share my experiences. I think “Teachers Day” is the best for that. We as teachers have been performing our duties earnestly and honestly. However, there are lot many ideas, tools, and tips that each one of us, has gathered during our stay and interaction with the experts and our course colleagues. Though I am not teaching Strength of Material, still I have started implementing what I learnt. I had been waiting for the response of the students and till now it has been fantastic. I must thank all “Teachers, Planners…” at IUCEE.

I attended the Analysis of Algorithms Course during the IUCEE workshop in June-July 2009 and have been impressed by the emphasis on quality education and more importantly eventual sustenance of the same. Often, if it easier to learn “what” to teach in any subject (with the help of the books, past question papers, our experience in learning the same etc) but not “how” to teach a course. IUCEE actually merely provides a platform that enables one LEARN “how” to teach a course. The former is algorithmic while the latter being intuitive can best be experienced and not taught. I partiicipated in principle of effective teaching in 2008. Eventhough I put in 28 years of experience I learnt new dimensions of learning and teaching especially “Peer group”learning.AT PRESENT I am encouraging my students to interact with each other and share their learning styles and techniques with every one.Besides,the participation itself is a lifetime experience.Whenever i meet my friends I explain in detail the IUCEE programme.So far Ihave shared this information with 200 people.

I was a participant of C-20( Introduction to Engineering) Course at FLI-2009. The IUCEE initiative is a great step towards improving the quality of Engineering Education. This participation has helped me to identify my shortcomings as a teacher in a technical Institute. Now, I try to practice what we have learned out of FLI in my daily class. I am in process of development of training kits for automation to make students understand better.I have gained a lot from the company of Learned Academicians from US at FLI-09. I am working in SRKNEC, Nagpur in Computer Department and in IUCEE-2009 i have attended course C17.Theory of computation by John Hopecroft. It was a life time achievement for me. I could never imagine that i could ever see John ,IUCEE has not only given me a chance to see the great personality like john but also to take a complete course from him. After coming from IUCEE09 when i told my collegues in through a seminar about the concept of IUCEE every one was very overwhelmed and they are just waiting for next years organization. This year we were first time participated in IUCEE so we were not knowing about it. But next year i Am sure we will have entries in every course of IUCEE.

In last 3 sem. many of our faculty attended various courses organized by IUCEE . I have found that these courses are imparting latest state of art technology to the engg. faculty making them in tune with curriculum taught at US Universities.
Facultymembers are eager to implement the skills , that they have learned to the students.Hence level and content of the subject taught is better.

I attended IUCEE organized program on Mechanical drafting using CAD. After attending that program i organised one program on CAE and Design Optimisation using optistruct 20 -24 July 2009. Moreover I have planned to conduct one week STTP on Mechanical Drawing using CAD in the month of Dec 2009.

IUCEE is not only a programme for effective learning & teaching methodologies, but also a platform for developing one’s leadership skills; for sharing and spreading knowledge; a faculty-connect destination; and a lot more.
On a personal level, the concept of 1-minute test (learnt during IUCEE workshops) was experimented at the end-sessions of some lectures and practicals, and the results indicated that students are far more comfortable expressing their thoughts on subject matters in ‘writing’ without their fellow-mates knowing about it, instead of talking openly.
With all humility, let me thank the organizers of IUCEE and wish that, we, as participants, would take the steps even further by spreading knowledge and information, and sharing results.

I am Gaurav Raheja, Faculty in Architecture at IIT Roorkee. I attended the ” Effective Teaching ” workshop by Dr.Rebecca and Dr. Richard Fedler in IUCEE 2009 only to realise the profound impact of effective instructors and their methodologies. The workshop has led me to a high degree of inspiration alongwith opening my mind to a pedagogic approach to design / architecture education. With a humble beginning of the semester, I can see some of the ideas (like creating a big picture in the lecture, delivering to a veriety of learning styles and recreating the learning objectives, etc.) under implementation in my own teaching strategies. Though, I have no measurable outcomes to prove in the very beginning of this journey of implementation, but my personal confidence to deliver has certainly gone up. And the question, as quoted by Dr. Krishna Vedula, ” I am teaching, Are they learning ?” keeps me going on. IUCEE to me has been a forum of committment towards education which has definitely shown me the way forward in the world of teaching.

I was a participant of the first FLI 2008 workshop on “Effective Teaching” at Infosys Mysore, where i was trained by Dr. Richard Felder & Dr. Rebecca Brent of NCSU. Starting from the planning to the implementation, the IUCEE workshop is a huge success story. The outcomes are marvellous as evident from the follow up activities. I personally conducted a followup workshop at my college for the benefit of my own & other engineering faculty of Hyderabad region. After getting trained at 2008 FLI, My own teaching has improved a lot which is evident from the improved student feedback for my subjects.
In all i am very much greatful to Prof Krishna Vedula & his team for providing me such an opportunity.

The IUCEE Programs are “Extraordinary programs conducted for ordinary people in an extraordinary way” to enrich the knowledge pool of teaching and research community in India. It attempts to bridge the gap in the standards of education between Indian Universities and US based universities. It enhanced the possibility of providing faculty ad student exchange programs with more number of universities in India and abroad. The world class facilities provided by Infosys Tehnologies for conducting IUCEE programs are exemplary. I have formed a group of seven faculty who will be teaching the basic course in electrical engineering.Out of the Seven three are newly inducted.
I have briefed them about the innovative teaching techniques I learnt in the workshop.we are preparing a daily plan of teaching which includes questions to be asked.taking small models of machine parts to the class which helps the student to understand the basic principles.Our semester has started on the first of this month.

I am from MIT, Pune. I was the participant of Computer Network Course taken by Prof. Jim Kurose. It was wonderful, and multidimensional. Which not only gave technology training but so many other things also. This training made me, think global and update myself for enhancing the quality of engineering education in our country. I attended project based learning in FLI 2008. I applied the concept (project based learning) with my UG as well as PG student of Mechanical engg and Industrial engg respectively. I attended the IUCEE programme on Effective teaching and learning at Infosys Mysore during May 2008. The programme was extremely well for the engineers since most of the teaching conepts and methodologies were unaware as a teacher. A complete course on three days enlightened me the way of handling class and the students.

IUCEE has provided an opprotunity to the faculty members of Indian Engineering Institutes to interact with some very eminent Professors from US Universities on different subject areas. IUCEE worksop conducted at Ifosys Mysor was very useful. I attended C18 course and learned inovative and new approach of teaching a subject like Signals and Systems to engg students. This workshop has given me a different perspective for enng education. We, at our institute ,TKIET Warananagar, in department of computer science and engg. conducted presentation based on IUCEE w/s and demonstrated staff various methods of effective teaching- learning process for engg education, and observed that staff was induced effectively with concepts discussed in IUCEE w/s and we are thanking IUCEE for conducting such activities and hope that such activities should be continued by IUCEE.

I had attended Computer Network course in FLI 2008 and Model Design using Matlab & Simulink in FLI 2009.After attending FLI 2008 IUCEE is a good platform for getting exposure to Engineering faculties and to interact with US faculties in research context but this should not stop as soon as the course is over , the US faculties must interact in the later developments as well. The Joint PhD Prog launched by IUCEE is a very good movement to speed up the PhD process in India and quality of work, but this is possible to NITs and IIT to start with immediate effect as they are autonomous but the majority is Engineering Faculties working in Engg colleges here we have to concentrate more. The Computer Networks course was very good and well conducted, i came to know the new network simulator tool wireshark for simulation and we are using presently for lab sessions for better understading with modified assignments. The approach is also changed from bottom up to top down. In the FLI 2009 , i understood simulink and how it can be used for modeling the systems. I taught the same to my students (83) of BE Information Technology after arrival and they are using it. It is also incorporated in the university curriculum for Electronics sothat near about 2500 students are going to use it form the university colleges.
Hence it is good movement towards quality education in India.

I am inspired by the expert and environment provided by IUCEE-2008. I made my movement faster to join my PhD. I have enrolled for PhD in January-2009.
I have attended the course on Signal Processing at IUCEE. Now i Teach the similar subject at UG and PG level with more concern, more insight and more confidence.
Student feed back last year i got around 90% at both levels.

I am very happy about the work being done by the IUCEE – they have brought some of the world’s best in Engineering Faculty to give a short course each, for the benefit of members of Faculty from various Universities in India. Their approach to guiding the members of Engineering Faculty on teaching methodology is commendable. Prof. Sidney Burrus from Rice University was, in particular, very good and inspiring, and I was lucky to sit through his classes in which he concentrated – directly and indirectly – on how to teach signal processing. I do not know how many teachers realize how important it is to develop a good teaching methodology (which includes everything: inspired-lecturing, designing appropriate assignments & examinations, and inspiring research activities) – but I recommend teachers to participate in this kind of short courses/Workshops – they will definitely gain significantly. Just wish to add that IUCEE is also encouraging the participant-teachers to conduct similar workshops subsequently, and that is a good idea. It is hightime that teachers took teaching more seriously than many of them may be doing, as per my observation.

I am Pradeep Kumar, participant of C15 (Graphical System Design Using LabVIEWI).
1. Beacuse of IUCEE and C15 I could present a seminar on ‘Graphical system Design using LabVIEW’ in our college (NMAMIT, Nitte, Karkala, Karnataka) in a Faculty Development program where faculty from neighbouring colleges (Mangalore Region) have participated. I used the meterials and ideas given by ‘Dhanabhal Solaikutty & Karun Jain’ during IUCEE.
2. I have given introduction to LabVIEW and its uses in academy and industry to the final year students of E&E branch. Guiding two projects based on LabVIEW.
3. I am in contact with all participants of C15 through our gmail group ‘LabVIEW’. Lot of informations being shares in the group.
4. And I am in contact with our instructor Karun Jain as we are planning to set up LabVIEW academy lab as a part of Research lab for TEQIP II phase.
